Match Report: Loko vs Surbiton AFC

2 Goals, A Loss & Out The Cup

" We Really Were The Better Team "

The run up to this game couldn't be further from disastrous if you tried! From a squad of 25 signed on players leading onto the weekend we had a team of 8 available. After lots of phone calls and messing around and people agreeing to play with either injuries or by cancelling other plans to be there we eventually had a team of 11.

We started the game very strong with Surbiton not even touching the ball for the first 6 or 7 minutes. Despite the fact we has some bad injuries and a seriously hungover player, we were dominant.

Danny P with a couple of quick succession attempts on goal accompanied by some lovely work on the right to supply an advancing Mackie in the middle, with a couple of chances. A throw on from Surbiton bounced through to an oncoming Surbiton player who easily dispatched the ball into our net. 0-1

We so did not deserve to be a goal down. We continued to push for an equaliser with Mackie getting on the ball on a lot of occasions influencing the game. Tonys kicking today was great! Yes the wind may of helped in the first half but every kick was strong, long and mostly directed. So many through balls from our midfield were just taken an inch or a centimetre away from either Mackie or Danny as the wind picked up.

A loko corner swung in found the head of Neil, who powerfully headed the ball towards goal only for either the crossbar or a Surbiton player to make a last ditch clearance, so close for his first goal this season.

After 30 Minutes disaster struck for Gary. Going full in for a tackle, he went to ground with a surbiton player landing on him. His knee twisted leading to a painful end to the game for Gary.

As we looked to the bench, all that stood there was a pile of bags, so we played on with ten men.

Half Time 0-1

We all agreed at half time that we had been the better team and really unfortunate to be a goal down. The fact we had ten men just meant we had to work harder!

We again started the second half strong with a fair few shots reigning in on there goal. Mackie unlucky to hit the crossbar a long way out on the right. A great ball in from the right from Dan R was again a cm away from the diving head of Danny P.

A shot into the side net followed by a long range effort from Matt just over the bar. Danny and Mackie both again missing by small margins.

Surbiton couldnt make the extra man advantage work for them at all as loko stepped up the pace of the game along with the attacking intensity. On the odd occasion they got the ball forward our defence held up strong. Scott B making a superb last ditch slide tackle when a Surbiton player was thorugh on goal. Neil and Scott as per most weeks, dominated the air at the back giving Surbiton no choice but to play the ball on the floor. Mark Reed, returning from a long spell away sent a surbiton player looking the wrong way with his eloquent turn on the ball.

But all this pressure, hard work and and dominance from Loko was to be undone again as a ball come into the corner of the area as we failed to clear and they capitalised on this netting the ball for a two goal lead!

Weekly Three Questions

Did we deserve to win today? Yes

Did We Put In Today? Yes

Man Of The Match?

Everyone was patted on the back today and so they should of been. Danny P run tirelessly up front alone and created several chances, however this weeks man of the match goes to Mackie. Always wanting the ball, always finding space all over the park. Well Played!

Final Thoughts

I know I wll probably sound like a moaning old man, however, what possible other result could we of expected today? We have a squad of 25 and only 9 were available until the Saturday morning when we finally got the 11. Matt played with a broken toe, Lee M properly under the weather and not wanting to play but still turned out, Meant to be Haydens week off as had a big night the night before but didn't have the luxury of not turning out, a fair few of us carrying knocks. We are supposed to be a team that playes football on a Sunday? We all have other things in our lives, that goes without saying but even that in itself tells the story, WE ALL, have other things. Kids, Wives, Businesses to run, other sporting commitments etc. Along with all these other responsibilities comes the responsibility of this team. So many hours, unknown to others, goes into this team behind closed doors. The fact I am writing this match report on a Sunday night feeling like shit, the arranging today of a referee for this Sundays game and a pitch to play it on. The paying of fees for all these services, the website, the kit, the meetings with the league, the registration of players, the kit also has become a job not many are able to commit to as they are not sure of their availability the following week, the input of money, all these jobs take time and effort so we can all have a club to play for and enjoy. We get nothing at all back from the club, not even the right to start a game, but satisfaction is enough to have a well run and happy club. All we ask is from you is that you help out with the club as much as you can, primarily just being available as much as possible is a big bonus, along with a response to just be respectful. Apologies for the rant but times like this weekend leave us thinking its just not worth it all and without all those extra things happening in the background, there will be no club.

We played well today and really did deserve the win, just a real shame it may be our last cup game this season and it was so winnable with the talent we have in our squad.

Big Thank You once again for all that did turn out and put a great shift in.

Remember: We Win together, We lose together, We drink together, We are Loko!
