Match Report: Surbiton Lions vs Loko

Four Goals, Offside & A Banger......

" How can a draw feel like a loss? "

Second game of the season and off the back of last week everyone was looking for redemption. With our new Light Blue Over sized Kit we were prepared and ready for this encounter, with a team we had never played before. Matt very correctly pointed out in the changing rooms before the game that the opposition were last year, a league above us, in which they finished mid table, so this was not gonna be no stroll in the park.

The first ten minutes were pretty evenly balanced with our trusted back three of Neil, Danny and Scott managing to subdue any forward advances from their " Lurch " styled no.10 who always looked a handful when played through. Stocker on the left linked well with Scott making advancing runs as well as closing down the Surbiton players as they attempted to play their way out of defense. Debutante Wayne looked a threat with his pace running between defenders towards goal.

Last year goal of the season was won within the first four games of the season, this year that record could be beaten. With only two games in and Fifteen minutes gone, a Dave F pulled back ball across the area to a ' long way ' out Scotty B, saw him smash a shot left footed straight into the top left corner of the net, lobbing the keeper at the same time! Absolute Banger Of a Goal! 1-0

Loko seemed to be on the front foot. A cross from the right found Stocker with his name in lights with the Hollywood style volley towards goal that Matt was only a cm away from getting his head on the end of. Dave F from the right hit a sweet low hard effort that just skimmed the post. Gary M making his way through the middle of the park played a perfect ball around the corner of a Surbiton defender that found Hayden, one on one with keeper. First shot the keeper parried to his right for Hayden to follow up left footed into the corner of the goal. 2-0.......
Wait a minute...... After celebrating we looked around to see the Surbiton Club chairman, acting as  linesman, with his flag up???? WTF. Never ever ever was he even a inch offside! Hate Cheats and this is exactly what happened here.

League debutante James in goal confidently plucked from the air attempts at the Loko goal along with WWE style elbow drops on the Surbiton forward. Lee Mustoe finished the half with a perfectly timed superb goal line clearance, to save us going into the break on level terms.

Half Time 1-1

Mark Reed on for Danny T.
"Things don't change" is an ever used saying that sums up Loko perfectly! We didn't come to the game for the start of the second half. We were slow and something just wasn't working? Surbiton took full advantage of this. Their Bruce Lee lookalike no.7 went through four Loko players with ease and got his shot away with a very lucky deflection that James had no chance saving. 1-1

Heads went down and big shouts were a plenty from Matt, Gary and Hayden to sort ourselves out. We play English Sunday League Football which is epitomized by fowls, strong challenges and getting stuck in, winning headers etc.....We have to fight in this league to win and we simply are not doing this.

Inevitably the pressure from Surbiton paid off with a low shot from the edge of the area squeezing Past James and finding the back of the net via the post. 2-1

The return after a whole season of Dan R on for Dave F followed by Gary for James T, as we looked for an equalizer. As we pushed, Surbiton we're always threatening to break, and this they did. A long ball forward saw there fast paced center mid go through on his own. Scotty B "took one for the team" as he managed to stop him in his tracks just short of our area! As he was called to the Ref we all could picture the Red card but the ref, feeling bad for the previous offside wrong decision, let us off with just a yellow! The resulting free kick was appalling and we cleared our lines.

Dan R played Wayne through into the box but his attempt was thwarted by the defense. Danny T back on for Matt, now playing a center mid role slotted through a lovely ball to Hayden who lifted the ball, outside of the foot, over the Surbiton Keeper. 2-2

The game was there for the taking, James T lovely cross into the box was unlucky not to be met by an attempt, as Neil's run saw him hit a shot wide of goal. The rest of the game fizzled out.....

Full Time
2-2

Weekly 3 Questions

Did we deserve to win today?  eerrmmm..Yes? Legitimate goal ruled out!

Did we put it in today? No, Absolutely not

Man of the Match?

No offence, but no outstanding performances today, however, with a screamer of a goal and his fantastic throw ins and headers, this weeks man of the match goes to Scotty B!

Final Thoughts

Football brings different opinions from everyone and that's what makes it competitive. Some of us will See today as two points lost and others as one point gained. First two games of the season are hard to judge our level so far, but I can definitely say we are sooooo much better than we performed today. We still have players to return to our line up and increased fitness with a braver attitude we can hold our own in this league!
