Loko Win Game of Two Halves

The railwaymen managed to get out a full fourteen players by giving debuts to four players.  They all came in and did well and means our squad list raises to a healthy twenty players.  The pitches at Wimbledon Common Extensions were the worst we had played on all season with the only grass out on the wings.

The team lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Ismail in goal, a back four of Marc, Steve, Ivan and Stefano, with Terry and Aaron on the wings and Dale and Diego in the centre of midfield.  James (picured above) and debutant Daniel started up front with three debutants Eudimar, Francis and Greg on the bench.

It was yet again the typical slow Loko start and for the first fifteen minutes we were not in the game, they started the brighter and pushed us back.  With rolling subs Dale made changes regularly throughout the match and this contributed to our shaky first half.

They had a number of attacks in and around the box but failed to really test Ismail in goal, they had a few shots go wide and those that were on target were easily saved.  A ball in from their right winger saw the ball bobble around the area and a clearance was deflected off Marc back above our own crossbar.

After around twenty minutes in Loko finally started stringing some passes together and Dale, James and Diego had some shots from long range that failed to test the keeper.  Then the railwaymen created the chance of the match when James fed Diego, who did likewise for Dale, who attacked the box and fed in Francis, who was one on one with the keeper but failed to get his shot away and the defender got in a last ditch challenge.

Lonsdale came again and were getting the decisions from the referee, who was the same anti Loko ref we had had against Kew Antigua 'C' in Battersea Park.  They won a corner and swung the ball into the six yard box, Steve failed to follow the opposition centre back and he had a free header from inside the six yard box that allowed them to take the lead.

Moments later, the home side thought the equaliser had arrived when after a few crosses into the box, the ball found James on the right side of the penalty area and he floated the ball onto the penalty spot where Francis beat the keeper to the ball and hit the net, the referee again gave the away team the benefit of the doubt and disallowed the goal for a very close offside decision.

Then another great chance came and went when Eudimar slipped a ball into the box, Dale chased and the keeper closed and the former slid and tried to chip the keeper only to see the ball rebound off the keepers chest and land safely at the feet of a defender.

The second arrived, again from a set-piece, as a free kick was floated into the box and their player was again unmarked to flick the ball past Ismail and gave them a two goal lead, which could have been very different.

Half-Time Loko 0 v FC Lonsdale 2

The gaffer decided to change the formation in the second half and sent the team out in a 4-2-3-1 formation with two defensive midfielders protecting the back four and effectively four pressing their back four.  Dale went in goal, the back four was Marc, Steve, Ismail and Stefano, with Eudimar and Diego defensive midfield, Aaron just in front flanked by Terry and James with Francis up top.

The changes worked almost immediately and the railwaymen pressed them back from the start, with Terry finding plenty of space on the right and his marauding runs down the right almost resulted in an immediate result when his ball across the area was stepped over by Eudimar and Steve took a touch but could only skew the ball wide.

Lonsdale were being pressed back but did make the occasional foray into the Loko area and they almost took a three goal lead when their player had a great chance from seven yards out after a penalty area scramble, but Steve put in a great block and Dale came out and parried the rebound wide with his right foot.

Greg had come on five minutes into the half and impressed immediately, he had a great touch for a tall lad and played the lone striker role superbly throughout the second half.  Within ten minutes the game became a contest when Diego was fouled thirty yards out, Terry floated in the free kick and GREG flicked the header backwards into the top corner for a great finish.

Loko continued to press and Aaron, Diego and Eudimar gave them no time on the ball in the centre, and with the two defensive midfielders sitting much deeper they found plenty of time on the ball to work the passes through Greg and into Terry and James on the wings.

The home team deservedly equalised when Diego, Eudimar and Aaron combined in midfield, TERRY made a superb run in off the touchline and was played through one on one and coolly beat the keeper into the bottom corner despite hopeful protests from Lonsdale for offside, which the referee this time waved away.

Almost immediately Loko should have taken the lead when Terry skinned his man down the flank and played a ball back into the area, Aaron controlled first time but could only chip the ball softly into the keepers hands, despite being unmarked six yards out.  Then from a corner Francis headed over when Steve shouted and was attacking the header from a much better position.

The winning goal was worthy of any match on any pitch, when TERRY was fed the ball by Eudimar and he cut inside the defender and hit a thirty five yard arrow into the top corner from the right hand side of the pitch.

Lonsdale created one more chance before the whistle went, when their player latched onto a ball over the top and beat the offside trap, Dale came out and closed the angle and forced the striker to take an early strike which went wide of the post.

The sypnopsis of the game as a whole was that despite creating some good chances it was a poor first half, but was followed by a superb second, which bodes well for the weeks to come.

Final Score Loko 3 v FC Lonsdale 2

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"It was the usual few changes once again from the week before and another four players making their debuts for the club.  This resulted in a shaky first half where we didn't really get going and despite still creating quite a few chances and having a goal disallowed, we conceded two simple goals and were chasing the game.

The change of formation at half-team worked really well and my two defensive midfielders began to run the game.  Greg made an instant impact and looked composed on the ball and Eudimar had a fantastic debut.  Well done to Francis and Daniel on debut also, who fitted in well and gave composed performances.

Our second half response was a joy to watch and we now need to take this confidence into our league games over the next few weeks and start climbing the table."

Late Goal Deflates Good Performance

There was a great response from the Lokomen for this game with a full squad and two standby players confirming attendance, one of which was needed early with Morris (pictured below) coming into the squad in place of Vincent who had fallen ill, on only an hour and a half's notice, showing fantastic commitment.

They had somehow managed to turn this into their home match, kicking off later than it should have, so with this, and their shocking pitch it gave them a slight advantage.

The team set up in a 4-4-2 formation with Catalin in goal, Stefano, Chris, Ismail and Aaron at the back, a midfield four of Terry, Dale, Diego and George with Dave and Roger up front.  The subs were Ivan, James and Morris so we had a decent squad for the day.

It was a slow Loko start as usual and they pushed us back early on, not looking like a team that had come off a 6-1 thrashing to London Rangers the week before.  They were moving the ball around quite well but were restricted to long rang efforts that Catalin easily dealt with.

Loko were second to the ball on too many occasions so Dale dropped Dave into the middle of the park to tighten things up and to start winning possession of the ball.  Loko now started to press some more and Dale played Terry in behind but instead of pushing on and shooting at goal, he hit the ball across the area to Roger, but it didn't find its intended target and drifted harmlessly out for a goalkick.

Then Dale played the ball into Terry who sent Dave on his way, and his surprising early ball behind the defender saw Roger run his man and shoot wide with his left foot as the defender pushed him wide.

The game was now pretty end to end and Wasteels should have taken the lead when a long throw was flicked on at the near post and their midfielder ran through and volleyed over the crossbar.

Then it was Loko's turn to put some pressure on their back four with fifteen minutes to half time, a Terry cross was met by Dale seven yards out and his header was cleared off the line at the back post, then shortly after Chris played Terry in behind the full back and his low drive was heading in at the far post until a full length dive by the keeper turned it out for a corner.

Half-Time Loko 0 v Valtaro Wasteels 'B' 0

James came on for George at the break and the talk was all about carrying on the way we had finished the previous half, getting the ball down and start to play.

Loko started the second half strongest and pinned them back for quite a while in and around their area, we had a number of corners but were unable to get on the end of anything and Aaron put in a good number of long throws but nothing came of them.  Both James and Roger had half a second on the edge of the box but failed to get shots away but the signs were looking good.

Valtaro started to push men forward and put in a number of decent balls into the box in behind the defence, but Catalin in goal was more than equal to all of them and he was having a very good game again.  Ismail kept the defence organised and was sweeping up quite well.

Ivan replaced Stefano with Aaron moving to right back, and Loko continued to press and should have took the lead with three really good chances, the first saw Dave trick his way past three men on the edge of the box and the keeper came out well and slid at his feet to make the block, then James got a cut back from Roger but with time to get a shot away he lost his footing and the ball went harmlessly wide.

The final chance should have brought Loko the lead, Terry and Aaron did well down the right and the latters cross saw James unmarked five yards out at the back post and his free header back across goal clattered off the crossbar and luckily for Wasteels wouldn't fall kindly for Tel who had his follow up blocked.

Morris replaced Diego with about twenty five minutes left and the game became such a battle due to the boggy pitch that it was now being played mainly in the middle of the park.  Dave could have scored again when Terry crossed the ball, the keeper came out but dropped it and Dave took the ball wide and around him and with only defenders on the line, hit the side netting.

Wasteels stepped up the pace and a tiring Loko were now off the pace and they created a few good chances in a short space of time, a goalmouth scramble saw Morris deflect the shot wide from a few yards out, then a great Chris challenge saw one of their headers go wide of the post.

They continued to come at us and twice got in down the left and floated balls to the back post which were hit over the bar from close range.  Their goal eventually came with ten minutes left and it was again a gifted goal, Chris started to attack a long ball but then stopped short and the ball bounced over his head and sent the striker away, Catalin was, for some reason, out of his box and the long range first time shot found the target and gave them the lead.

Loko put Dave back up top and continued to press, a foul on James saw Loko win a free kick on the left touchline and after a long injury delay to one of their players, Terry swung a great ball onto the penalty spot which Morris met with a flick of his right boot and despite the whole goal to aim for, unluckily saw the ball go inches past the post.

The referee blew his whistle and Loko were unfortunate to be on the losing side, as we had more than matched our opponents throughout, but our lack of finishing in front of goal is now becoming a real problem as we've had chances in all our competitive games since Christmas but have drawn two and lost three of those and our return should have been so much better.

To make matters worse, Aaron was sent off after the final whistle for dissent at the referee and this will now make our life harder with a few match suspension, just as he had started to become more involved, more eager and more vocal within the team over the last few matches.

Final Score Loko 0 v Valtaro Wasteels 'B' 1

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"I cannot fault any of my players for effort and commitment, we battled throughout and created some good chances and with more composure we could easily have had two or three today.

I was not very happy with a couple of players and their attitude, as they continually argued with each other, the referee and the opposition.  It doesn't do anyone any favours and probably ends up with the referee awarding more against us and those players in question not playing to their full potential.

I know that a lot of decisions seemed very one sided throughout by the man in black but it doesn't help so in future cut it out and start encouraging your teammates.

We play these again in two weeks time at our place and this is likely to be a double header so we'll see then how many players play, who played today, not that I'm implying anything at all.........!"

Man of the Match
Terry - It was another stand out performance from Tel and this is the second week running he has bagged the award, as he ran, ran and ran and could have scored on a couple of occasions.  He harried, was good on the ball and his set piece delivery today was first class.

Special mention to Ismail who held the defence together well throughout and to myself for my constant communication and the fact I got through a full game, I need you all to start communicating more in a positive fashion.

Scoreless Draw For The Railwaymen

It was a full compliment of players for Loko and everyone who said yes was there and ready to go well before kick off.  Catalin was again in goal, the usual back four of Stefano, Steve, Chris and Ivan.  In midfield we had Ismail and Vincent in the centre with Terry on the right and George on the left, and Dale and Dave were paired up front.  Morris, Aaron and trialist Kalmel were on the bench.

The team started relatively slowly and Kew were on the front foot inside the first ten minutes, they got down the right a couple of times and got the ball across the face of goal but Steve and Stefano were on hand to clear the danger.

Loko gradually started winning the midfield battle and Ismail and Vincent were working together extremely well with the two of them hunting in a pack.  With Terry (pictured above) and Dave also putting lots of pressure on the left back we pinned them in their half for a considerable amount of time but only had tame shots from Dave and George to show for the pressure.

Their striker was very tricky with the ball and Chris got booked for a late tackle from behind, the resultant free kick went straight into the arms of Catalin and he was having his usual commanding game in goal.

George and Terry were working the wings well and the latter particularly, kept at the left back and produced numerous good runs and a couple of pull backs that Dave and Dale should have done better with.

The final action of the half saw the ball come from Ivan through Vincent to Dale and he turned and hit a weak shot which the keeper easily saved.

Half-Time Kew Antigua 'C' 0 v Loko 0

There were two changes at half-time with debutant Kamel replacing George on the left, and Dale who was clearly still carrying his knee injury, was replaced by Aaron who took up residence on the right wing with Terry moving up top.  Dale asked his players to get on top for the first fifteen to twenty minutes and take it from there.

Loko came out strongest early in the second half and were winning what had become very much a midfield battle with neither team creating very much.  The railwaymen won a couple of early corners but couldn't connect properly from decent deliveries.  Dave almost jinxed past three or four players and was about to unleash an effort but the defender slid in and blocked.

Terry was working hard to challenge and close down every ball and would have been clear on goal but for a shocking offside flag from the oppositions linesman when Tel was five yards onside.  Unfortunately, the raised flag trend continued throughout with many dubious decisions that the referee was content to blow for, once again we encountered a referee that didn't give Loko it's fair share of decisions.

Morris came on for Ivan, with him going right wing and Aaron dropping into full back, where he played very well in getting us driving forward down the left.

Terry and Dave broke through the backline a couple more times during the seond half but took early shots wide from the edge of the area when they could have continued into a one on one with the goalkeeper.

The opposition had a few free kicks around the edge of the area that Catalin dealt with easily and their best chances of the half were created by our own indecision between the keeper and Steve, that saw Catalin make quick reaction blocks too ensure that we did not concede any own goals.

A corner into the box was cleared and the ball back in saw Steve in the clear six yards out but his header was tipped round the post by the keeper, even though the never ending flag was raised again.

The best and final chance of the game fell to Terry when Steve floated a ball to the back post over the defence from the half way line and Tel hit it on the volley from six yards out with only the keeper to beat, but blasted it over the bar.

Final Score Kew Antigua 'C' 0 v Loko 0

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"It was a brilliant peformance from numbers one through fourteen today.  We were up against a team on a good run who had won a few games in the last few weeks and were up to third, and I thought we were the better team over the ninety minutes.

Apart from the first ten minutes when we struggled to settle, we gradually took control of the game and in the second half especially had numerous chances to take the lead.  We struggled to get any meaningful efforts on target, with the best of the bunch a six yard volley from Terry, with just the keeper to beat which unfortunately went over the bar.

If we keep getting the same players and put in the same effort every week then I'm positive that we can string a few results together and start moving up the table."

Team Line Up

10. Dave
11. George
12. Aaron (Replaced Dale 45th Minute)
13. Kamel (Replaced George 45th Minute)
14. Morris (Replaced Ivan 55th Minute)

Man of the Match
Terry - This was probably his best game for us since he joined at the start of last season, he had the left back panicking throughout the first half and broke through their defensive line on numerous occasions in the second.  Good energy, control and gave us a valuable outlet throughout.

Special mention to the whole back four who were solid today but especially Stefano and Ivan at full back who played extremely well and kept their wingers quiet.
