Match Report: Real Northern 'B' v Loko

Sunday 30th January 2010
Sportsmans League Division 3

Real Northern 'B' 1 v Lokomotiv Londres FC 1

Bare Eleven Gain Deserved Draw

Only a bare eleven turned out to face Real Northern, as once again we were let down by players on the morning of the match with two new players coming in to cover for missing regulars.

Catalin started in goal with a back four of Steve, Chris, Ivan and Stefano, Ismail (pictured above) was defensive midfield with Vincent along side and Luciano and Diego on the wings. Terry was up front with James sitting in behind.

It was a scrappy first half with both teams guilty of giving the ball away in all areas of the pitch. Loko had the wind against them and found it difficult to clear the ball over the half way line particularly from goal kicks which put us under more pressure.

Diego was linking up well with Terry down the left on a few occasions but lack of support saw the moves break down each time.

The opening goal came when Ivan fouled his man thirty five yards out after losing the ball in the sun, poor marking at the back post from the resulting free kick left their winger free to fire a powerful shot past Catalin at the near post.

Real Northern had most of the possession leading up to half time and only a smart one on one save from Catalin and a great block from Stefano kept it at 1-0 until half-time.

Half-Time Real Northern 'B' 1 v Loko 0

The general feeling amongst the players was that we needed to get more support up to Terry so James was pushed up front to make it a 4-4-2.

We came out of the blocks well after the break and turned the game around as they were now the one's struggling against the wind.  All of our good play was down our left with Diego, Vincent, Terry and James looking dangerous but just unable to find the killer pass.

Loko had a great chance to equalise when James chipped a perfect pass over the defence after a scrap on the eighteen yard line only for Terry to connect too well and lift his volley over the bar. Spirits were lifted and we all sensed we could get back into the game despite the referee seemingly playing as their twelfth man on many occasions.

The defence were all playing really well and Ismail was sweeping up in front superbly and didn't give them much of a sniff all half with the only chances they had coming from dodgy refereeing decisions.

Finally, we got what we deserved with twenty minutes left, more good play down the left saw the ball arrive to VINCENT twenty yards out and the new boy connected sweetly with a low left foot drive past the keeper into the bottom corner.

Loko pushed and pushed to find a winner but despite lots of throw in's and corner's the railwaymen just couldn't create that decisive chance and the game finished as a draw.

Captains Corner: January 2011

Your Captain Steve Haley:
"It's good to be back playing again after what seemed like the longest winter break in history, although I think the rest did us all a favour and gives us a chance to get our season back on track.

Sunday was a hard fought game and we were unlucky not to come away with at least a draw after our second half performance, but there are a lot of positives to take away, particularly the fact that we have finally found a keeper - and a good one at that!

The cup has to be our main focus as we have an excellent chance of winning the trophy, although looking at the league table we can still finish in a respectable position as everybody seems to be taking points off each other and we have a couple of games in hand on the teams above us.

Come on Loko!"

Match Report: Loko v Wee Hoose Celtic

Sunday 23rd January 2011
Sportsmans League Division 3

Lokomotiv Londres FC 1 v Wee Hoose Celtic 2

Soft Penalty Gifts Celtic Victory

It was the first league game of a new year but unfortunately yet again we had someone drop out on the morning of a match, this is now happening every game and really disrupts the teams preparation.  Luckily for Loko we had Mark Bullock, making his tenth Loko debut, coming along to watch and Ismail's son Hakim as well so we ended up with a full squad.

The team was Catalin in goal, a back four of Stefano, Chris, Ismail and Ivan, a midfield four of Aaron, Diego, Steve, George with Dale and Dave up front.

It was a frantic start with tackles flying in all around, for the first ten minutes not too much was created but then Celtic found some rhythm and started to push the Railwaymen back.  They managed to break through the backline on a couple of occasions far too easily but Ismail and Chris backtracked well and they ended up having shots from the edge of the area but never really hit the target.

Loko were not playing very well and were giving up possession far too easily, but we did hit them on the counter attack on a couple of occasions, Dave (pictured above) got away down the right and crossed for Aaron who could only direct his free header directly at the keeper who was closing him down, and then shortly after a goalmouth scramble ensued and Dave looked like he could curl home from eight yards but drilled it straight  at the defender.

Celtic had a few more chances and only bad finishing kept the scores level at the break as they headed wide a couple of times from inside the six yard box and Catalin made a couple of great saves, Dale switched positions with Diego to try and tighten the midfield.  Aaron had an altercation with one of their players before the break and both players were lucky that the referee didn't send them off and both ended up with a booking for violent conduct.

Half-Time Loko 0 v Wee Hoose Celtic 0

The half time team talk was that the team needed to compete more as we were second to the headers and first and second challenges and we needed to believe in ourselves.  One change at the break saw Hakim replace Aaron on the right wing.

It may have been the team talk but Loko started the second half on fire and were on the money from the first whistle, we were finally attacking as a unit and giving each other options.

The ball was worked from the back by Ismail through Dale and Diego and found Dave out on the right, he skinned two and drilled the ball across the six yard box and Steve had an open goal but with the ball a little behind him he couldn't connect properly and the ball trickled towards goal and was cleared off the line, the rebound found George ten yards out and he had all the time in the world but shot wide with just a couple of defenders on the line and no keeper in sight.

Almost immediately Diego and Dave linked well and put in Steve down the left and his shot hit the outside of the post and out for a goalkick.  The goal eventually came and it was a great solo effort, when DAVE came in off the touch line again past two defenders and hit the bottom corner from outside the box.

Loko made a change and Morris came on for Stefano, and were still dominating possession with a couple of tame long range efforts from Dale and Diego.  They then had a good chance when their player curled towards the top corner but Catalin dived full length and tipped the ball over the bar.

The game turned when Dale injured his knee in a tackle with the opposition and the game was halted for five minutes, he tried to play on but Loko seemed to lose concentration and within two minutes they had equalised when their player jinked far too easily into the box and mishit a shot into the bottom corner.

Loko made their final substitution immediately with Dale unable to continue and he was replaced by Mark, who went up front and Diego dropped back into midfield.  Within another two minutes the game completely turned around and this time Loko gifted them a penalty, a shot which was going way over the bar was blocked by Ivan with his hands above his head and they scored the penalty at the second time of asking, after encroachment ruled out the first.

Loko tried to push and should have done better when Mark was sent into the box with a defender in front of him and he hit the side netting with two Loko players free to his right and Diego free to his left, and another goalmouth scramble from a corner went unrewarded.

Celtic had plenty of counter attacks as we pushed forward and good goalkeeping, last chance defending and bad finishing kept us in the game.

Loko nearly got the equaliser in the last minute that their battling display would have justified when Mark was again played in on the left hand side of the box and his shot across goal beat the keeper but hit the inside of the post and bounced back out into the keepers grateful arms.

Final Score Loko 1 v Wee Hoose Celtic 2

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"It wasn't a great first half and we were lucky to go in at the break level, but I thought the way we responded in the second half was fantastic and we battled away well and even though the opposition created a lot of chances I thought we were unlucky not to snatch a draw at the end.

We played missing four big players in Terry, Roger, James and Rhyce which could have made a difference but everyone who came in gave everything and I have nothing but praise for the way we kept going right until the end when I thought Mark had stolen us a point.

If I hadn't got injured then we may not have lost concentration and may have kept up the pressure, but these things happen.

It was a good game and very enjoyable, and we need to start turning these results around."

Team Line Up
1. Catalin
2. Stefano
3. Ivan
4. Chris
5. Ismail
6. Steve (c)
7. Aaron [Y]
8. Diego
9. Dale
10. Dave
11. George
12. Hakim (Replaced Aaron 45th Minute)
13. Morris (Replaced Stefano 50th Minute)
14. Mark (Replaced Dale 60th Minute)

Goal
Dave (1)
50th Minute - A run down the right and cut inside by Dave saw him hit the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Man of the Match
Catalin - A very, very good performance from our keeper kept us in the game.  He was commanding, came for crosses and made some excellent saves.  Having a keeper who can keep you in the game to the final whistle can make all the difference.  Brilliant game, well done.

Match Report: Loko v Clapham Rovers 'A'

Sunday 16th January 2011
Friendly

Lokomotiv Londres FC 0 v Clapham Rovers 'A' 4

Ten Men Perform Well Despite Defeat

This friendly match was arranged at the last minute following the cancellation of our cup game against Valtero Wasteels. Unfortunately, two squad players let us down on the morning of the game, which resulted in Lokomotiv taking the field with only ten players.

Despite their lower division status, Clapham Rovers 'A' proved a handful right from the start with their midfield maestro/club manager pulling the strings and spraying balls to their mobile forwards. We were understandably on the backfoot with most of the action taking place in our own half.

Catalin, our new keeper found his feet right from the start though, showing good positioning and excellent ball handling skills as well as bravery.  However, on twenty minutes, yet another Clapham Rovers incursion cut through the heart of the Lokomotiv defence too easily and their forward slotted the ball past Catalin unchallenged.

Clapham Rovers kept dominating but Lokomotiv heads didn’t drop.  Diego and Terry’s (pictured above) trickery was causing the opposition problems in midfield but our attacks were never seriously threatening their keeper.  On the half hour, a corner from the left threaded its way past Terry who misjudged the flight of the ball and let it slip past him at the nearpost.

Lokomotiv were still trying hard but being one player short was proving a major handicap. Ten minutes later, following a fruitless Lokomotiv corner where Steve and Ivan went up to make their height count, the ensuing counter attack saw their right winger speed past the backline onto a through ball from their midfield. Stefano chose to raise his arm calling for an offside but, in the absence of a linesman, this proved a futile effort. With the Lokomotiv defence out of position, their winger crossed the ball to their forward who placed the ball to the left of our exposed keeper and into the net.

A few minutes later, a cross from the left saw George, who so far had been working very hard to penetrate their defence, enter the miss-of-the-season category! To be fair, he lost his footing on the greasy pitch but he skied the ball from 2 yards out leaving any chance of recovery up in smoke.

Jusst prior to half-time, a free-kick just outside the box saw their player curve the ball to the right of the wall and low into the keeper’s bottom right hand corner.

Half-Time Loko 0 v Clapham Rovers 'A' 4

The second half saw Lokomotiv getting stuck in and never letting their heads drop. Terry and Diego were having a cracking game and pulling off good, effective tricks, Morris was making his physical presence count, George was pushing hard.

Steve was going in with his trademark flying tackles left, right and centre whilst Aaron and Stefano were pushing down the half way line with renewed energy.

Yet, despite the odd corner where Ivan’s header was blocked near the open goal and James’ foray into their defence and shot on goal, Loko opportunities were few and far between because of the poor service to the front men.

However, the midfield and defence were combining and communicating well, which probably instilled a lot of confidence into the team and allowed the Railwaymen to keep a clean sheet in the second half.

Final Score Loko 0 v Clapham Rovers 'A' 4

Club Secretary Ivan Rahal's comments:
“With eleven players, we may still not have been able to win the game but we could have at least expected a draw. So the blame is firmly on these two players who let the whole team down on the morning of the game.

On the positive side, the team’s attitude and performance were extremely encouraging. We got some much needed practice before our next crucial games and have now recruited a good new keeper into the bargain. Roll on our next competitive match!"

Team Line Up
1. Catalin
2. Stefano
3. Aaron
4. Ivan
5. Steve (c)
6. Morris
7. Terry
8. Diego
9. George
10. James

Man of the Match
The whole team performed well but the award goes to Terry for showing great technical and effective skills and commitment. Special mention goes to Catalin and Diego who both exceeded expectations with good performances.
