Match Report: Putney Ferrets v Loko

Sunday 21st November 2010
Sportsmans League Division 3

Putney Ferrets 2 v Lokomotiv Londres FC 0

Disappointing Disjointed Display

Following a good result in the Cup the previous week, the Railwaymen warmed up for this Sunday’s league game in excellent spirits and hoping to eradicate the memories of previous poor league performances.

Yet, after a few minutes in the game, Loko’s hopes were dashed.  A clever ball floated over the defence from the right saw their forward outpace the defence into the box, however the ball was flicked on from their midfielder with the forward now stood ten yards offside but the flag stayed down, and with only Eric to beat, he did by placing the ball into the Loko keeper’s bottom right corner.

With many of our players heads dropping instantly and our midfield letting Ferrets’ attack outflank us, especially on our left hand side, the situation looked ominous.

Another dangerous situation within our box saw their forward take a low shot to the left of Eric which our goalkeeper parried confidently and rather spectacularly.  They then got through on goal only to shot wide then a mishit clearance by Morris in his own area gifted them another one on one which they again hit wide.

Despite the occasional clever dribble or one-twos in the Ferrets’ half, Lokomotiv never got into the game and were further inhibited by the ref who seemed rather partial to the Ferrets.

From a throw-in in the 22nd minute, the ball flew over Chris (pictured above) who had switched off, and with him  facing our own goal, their forward simply collapsed under Chris’s feet which caused the referee to award them a penalty. Their midfielder slotted the ball low and hard to the bottom left of Eric leaving him no chance.

To compound Lokomotiv’s misery, Vincent twisted his knee and wriggled in agony and had to be replaced by Ashley.

Loko did have some chances throughout the half, Marc had a shot heading for the top corner turned over the crossbar by the keeper, Steve clipped the crossbar with a header and Roger also headed a yard wide.

Aaron had a shot which was a yard over and in the last minute of the half Ashley swung over a corner which was cleared off the line by the defender underneath his own crossbar.

Half-Time Putney Ferrets 2 v Loko 0

Ivan came on for Morris and Dale went in goal for Eric who was asked to play in his favourite position upfront with Roger pushing back into midfield.

Rhyce was wriggling past defenders. Chris and Steve were sweeping nicely at the back. Roger was showing his usual great composure on the ball and letting experience do the talking. Eric proved far less goal shy than his teammates and was taking countless shots from the edge of the box.

From a rare corner, Ivan outjumped his marker but his header hit the crossbar. Despite a better tempo and Loko creating more chances, it simply wouldn’t happen, and with Aaron coming off with an injured shoulder in the 70th minute, a Lokomotiv comeback with only ten men now looked even more unlikely.

Midway through the half Eric dribbled sideways past three defenders and moved menacingly towards their box. But once again, his shot from just outside the box was pushed round the post at full stretch by their keeper who was having a good game.  Unfortunately, throughout the game too many players were not playing with teammates, they were playing as individuals and ignoring players in better positions, and the attitude was at times quite shocking and unhelpful.

Ferrets were still threatening down the wings but did not create many chances and Dale didn't have much to do in the second half apart from chase after the ball behind the goal when it kept going wide, he only had one save to make low to his left but the shot had no power behind it.

Lokomotiv were holding on easily but not playing well enough as a team to get back in the game, it was all in vain.

Final Score Putney Ferrets 2 v Loko 0

Club Secretary Ivan Rahal's comments:
"After a great start to the season, we seem to have lost our way. The recurring pattern is: concede early goals then panic once in possession then start blaming each other then lose our heads and give up.

True, we’ve started the season without three of our best players from last year.  However, on occasions, we’ve proved that we can still develop a great passing game.  So let’s restore some positivity to this team and encourage each other to make getting out of bed on a cold Sunday morning all worth it."

Team Line Up

2. Morris
3. Stefano

8. Dale
9. Roger
10. Aaron M
11. Rhyce
12. Ashley (Replaced Vincent 25th Minute) [Y]
13. Ivan (Replaced Morris 45th Minute)

Man of the Match
Marc - He had a great game, he gave everything for 90 minutes and never stopped trying.  He was an example to some other players by the way he never moaned and did whatever was asked of him.  Only a good save by the keeper stopped him from opening his account.

Match Report: Loko v Wee Hoose Celtic

Sunday 14th November 2010
Bert Gaby Challenge Cup Round 2

Lokomotiv Londres FC 2 v Wee Hoose Celtic 1

Quarter-Final Beckons in New Year

Loko were all up for this cup game against Wee Hoose Celtic who like us were struggling in the league due to inconsistent results. We had Pete and Peggy back this week, Roger brought Eric and Rhyce brought Aaron.

We started with a 4-3-3 formation which sent a strong attacking message and we showed our intentions from the start.  Typical Loko we were all over them for the first fifteen minutes, then a defensive error by our right back let their striker in from a long ball, he got a shot away which was saved well by Eric but they scored the rebound from an acute angle.

We didn't let our heads go down and we kept the pressure up and our efforts were soon rewarded. We had some nice build up play between the defense and midfield and when we won a throw in, Chris launched a long ball into the box and Dave rose highest to head the ball on, JAMES (pictured above) got hold of the flick and skinned a defender, took it to the by line and lashed a shot against the crossbar and in the corner for our equaliser.

We kept the pressure on and were defending well as a team, and we had some lovely passing and build up play, DAVE got the ball into his feet on the edge of the box and pulled it back, dummied a few times and skinned a couple of defenders before shooting into the bottom corner.

We maintained the momentum for the rest of the half and went in at half time on top.

Half-Time Loko 2 v Wee Hoose Celtic 1

We kept with the same formation and attacking strategy for the second half, Celtic came out strong and were throwing men forward pressing but not really creating chances.

We had a few chances in front of goal from James and George but our finishing let us down at the vital moment. Celtic continued to press and had a couple of efforts and crosses on goal which Eric did really well to punch away and got down well to save.

There was a one on one situation which Eric dealt with and again saved well but that was the total of their forays into the Railwaymens penalty area.  Everyone was working hard for each other and as the minutes ticked down on the clock the quarter-finals were beckoning.

In the last twenty minutes they brought on a substitute who was quite pacey and he caused a few problems but Loko soaked up the pressure to see out a well earned victory and progression to the quarters in the new year.  It was a good performance from a much changed line-up.

Final Score Loko 2 v Wee Hoose Celtic 1

Vice-Captain Roger Barne's comments:
"Good performance, the 4-3-3 formation seem to work well today. Eric volunteered to play in goal , and gave a commanding performance, very comfortable and capable in coming out for the ball, the highlight being a brilliant save in the last five minutes.

The partnership of Pete and Chris was impressive (Watch out Steve Haley!), however, there were a couple of lapses from the full backs, one which led to the opening goal.

Rhyce was made captain due to a few players arriving late and he revelled in his responsibility. The midfield was solid with 3 against 4. The 3 forwards worked well from the front which meant their defence had little time on the ball.  A cracking equaliser by James who scored from an impossible angle and a good individual goal by Dave.

Well done guys and a Quarter Final fixture to look forward to next year, so lets build on today's performance and take this positive result into our league games.

Special mention to Dave who led the line well and Chris and Rhyce who were also key players today."

Defender Chris Clarke's comments:
"A really good positive performance today.  We didn't panic on the ball and we had confidence and belief to build from the back.  Well done everyone."

Goals

40th Minute - Shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Man of the Match

Match Report: Mass v Loko

Sunday 7th November 2010
Sportsmans League Division 3

Mass 8 v Lokomotiv Londres FC 3

Fragile Loko Concede Eight More

It was a frantic start with us on the back foot from the off as Mass threw men forward in numbers.  Loko stood firm for ten minutes but then they got their break through, two defenders went for the same ball with neither putting in a solid enough tackle which allowed their striker past to shoot from twenty yards and score into the top corner.

Their second came soon after as once again they pushed a lot of men forward and they got behind the defence and we failed to track the runners. We found ourselves 3-0 down when Chris lost the ball in the sun and it hit his hand for a penalty, their striker drilled under Gary’s dive.

Loko finally started to get on the ball with Phil, George and Dave playing some good football down the left which earned us a free kick twenty five yards out.  DAVE (pictured above) stepped up and placed a perfect shot over the wall into the corner.

Heads were up with the score at 3-1 and we were now playing with more confidence and created a few more chances but with half time upon us their winger got behind our defence into the box and his cross cum shot caught Gary out and went in at the near post.

Half-Time Mass 4 v Loko 1

Steve and Dave emphasised during the break that we need to fight for each other and play as a team to take some pride away from this game. Vincent was suffering from a headache after getting hit in the face with the ball so Mark came on at right back with Morris pushing into midfield.

The second half was much better in terms of shape and ball retention but it was like a rollercoaster ride throughout.  Mass made it 5-1 before some quick thinking from Phil, throwing an early long ball onto the head of an unmarked GEORGE to make it 5-2.

Loko were getting in behind quite often as they got slack at the back, but on the back of every attack they would break quickly outnumbering our tiring defence.  It was 6-2 before Loko got another one back, Dave closed down the defender as he had done all game and the ball was played through to JULIAN whose initial touch seemed to have wasted the chance but he struck a brilliant shot into the top corner for 6-3.

Mass scored twice more late on to make it 8-3 and end a hard game for the Loko men.

Final Score Mass 8 v Loko 3

Captain Steve Haley's comments:
"Lets take nothing away from Mass they are a good team, from front to back they are all comfortable on the ball and most teams will struggle against them this season. We had lots of players away which limited our options although the new guys who came in all did really well when we had the ball.

Another game for us to forget i'm afraid, its frustrating because we’ve proved we can play some great football but we need to learn how to play as a team and defend and attack together."

60th Minute - A quick throw by Phil to an unmarked George and he hit the net.

Man of the Match
This was Dave, stepped up as captain and worked tirelessly on his own up front closing down defenders and scored a great free kick.  Special mention to Phil, Julian and Mark who all came in and did a good job for us in a difficult game.
