Loko Slip to One Goal Defeat Again!

A team of twelve turned out for the game in pouring rain that luckily halted just before we went out to warm up. Ismail went in goal again and we lined up in a 4-4-2 formaton.
Loko started quite well and were stringing together a few passes in and around their penalty box but failed to penetrate the back-line early on. The inevitable happened againt the run of play when Rangers played a ball over the top of the backline, Dale had the striker covered but Ismail had chosen to come out when he didn't need to and the striker toe poked past him into the empty net, it was a gift.

Shortly after Roger had a chance on the six yard box but choose to take a touch and was closed down, when a first time shot would have just had the keeper to beat, Nicolas did the same when running past the defender but instead of shooting at the exposed keeper, he cut inside and had the ball taken from him.

Rangers had the chance to extend the lead when their striker got past Nelson with pace and with Dale coming across to cover, hit the ball wide. But the second came shortly after when Paul and Nelson were picking up men at the far post, the ball came in and Paul left his man to attack the ball but they both missed it and the unmarked winger drilled across the box which Ismail dropped at the strikers feet to tap home. Two goalkeeper mistakes and two costly goals yet again for Loko who are badly missing a regular keeper.

The Railwaymen started to panic and stopped doing the basics with balls across their own area and trying to dribble out of defence, but came close when Peggy got behind the full back with only the keeper to beat but drilled over the bar. The tide changed when Rhyce floated a great ball into Roger who chested back to NICOLAS to grab his fourth goal in three games by drilling past the keeper.

Within a minute Loko were level when DAVE collected the ball on the edge of the area, side stepped the defender and hit the ball hard down the middle and saw it go through the keepers hands above his head. It was level at the break.

Half-Time Loko 2 v Worcester Park Rangers 2

Morris came on for Paul at the break slotting in at full-back and the game was quite even, until again out of nothing Dale attacked the free man who ran at the defence but there was no cover in the back line as they slipped a ball through the middle for the big striker to score past a stranded Ismail.

Loko continued to create and give away chances in a very open game, when Rhyce looked like he was one on one but almost stopped to come inside a defender that wasn't there and was tackled, Nicolas and Roger had efforts saved by the keeper and he saved a long range effort and a free kick from Dave that was just close enough that he didn't have to move that far.

Rangers should have scored on two occasions when they attacked down the left wing and played a ball behind the defence but the striker knocked the ball wide, then Dale went to attack a header but his shout was ignored by Vincent who header backwards and the striker beat Ismail to the ball and slipped it past him, only for it to hold up in the mud and was cleared to safety.

Loko equalised when Dale put in a big slide tackle into the striker, won the ball which Vincent knocked to Peggy who in turn slipped it into Nicolas to run the defender and slide across to ROGER to equalise for the second time.

The game continued to be end to end, with Rangers now just shading possession and territory and the inevitable crushing blow came from a direct long ball when Dale misjudged the header outside the area and the ball glanced backwards where the striker responded and left Morris rooted to the spot to slip past Ismail for the winner.

Both teams had lots of chances, and with the gifted first two goals and our inability to take some clear cut chances, Rangers edged the victory with some decent finishing by the big lad up front.

Final Score Loko 3 v Worcester Park Rangers 4

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"It was a much better performance than last week and there was a lot more desire within the team to do well. We need to do the simple things better and start defending more as a team, if we hold the shape and put in bigger challenges then we'll start conceding less goals.

We are looking really strong going forward but defensively as a team we are struggling to clear our lines and do the basics correctly. We need to win the headers, sweep up through balls and not try dribbling out of defence. Think about your strengths and play to those, each player should be doing what they are strong at and not trying to do things that don't come naturally.

There's only one way for us to go and that is onwards and upwards!"

Sunday 14th February 2010
Sportsmans League Division 3

Lokomotiv Londres FC 4 v London Rangers 5

Twenty Mad Minutes & Game Lost!

Loko started relatively well, with Paul (pictured below) captaining the team in the absence of Steve H, and despite missing some key players we got on top, winning some challenges around the park and looking comfortable at the back with Dale organising.

It took twenty minutes for Loko to take the lead after ROGER chased a Morris ball over the top and ran through on goal after holding off the defender to round the keeper and score.

London Rangers had a few long range efforts but Terry was relatively untroubled in goal and the defence were holding much more solid than recent weeks and Roger and Nicholas worked their socks off up front.

On the half hour mark, NICOLAS again chased a ball that looked comfortable for the defender and keeper and toe poked it past the keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. It was five minutes later that NICOLAS did the same thing again, getting beind the defence and drilling the ball past the keeper at the near post, the opposition claimed side netting but the referee checked the net and there was no gap!!?!

Rangers scored a soft goal with the second to last kick of the half when Loko failed to clear a corner and an unmarked player hit a hopeful shot past Terry to give them hope.

Half-Time Loko 3 v London Rangers 1

No changes were made at half-time and what should have been a composed first ten minutes, doing the simple things, easy passing, getting in your challenges and slowing the game down just didn't materialise.

Rangers brought one back almost immediately when tackles failed to be made in the middle of the park and the winger ran Dale and played a simple ball into the near post but once again we scored an own goal when the ball deflected off Ivan and wrongfooted Terry.

Almost immediately it was 3-3 when Stefano gave away a needless free-kick on the left hand side of the box and their centre back ran to the back post and headed home completely unmarked, it was now becoming a shambles and people seemed to have given up even when we were still level.

Their fourth came with a simple through ball where Dale tried to close down the defender who had ran all the way from his own penalty area without the hint of a tackle, and nobody thought about covering the simple through ball to the striker who was completely unmarked to get there just ahead of Terry and lift it over him.

What had become an awful twenty minutes got worse when Ismail chested the ball down in his own six yard box and Terry could have just picked up the ball but chose to clear with his feet despite several shouts. The ball only made the edge of the penalty area where they shot straight back into the right side of Terry's goal.

Dale brought Steve M on for Stefano and replaced Morris with Andy, Ismail moving to centre back, Dale into centre midfield and Andy on the left.

Loko continued to be disorganised at the back and Dale tried to push everyone forward and started putting some tackles in where we had failed before, but their was little desire to get back in the game and they were winning most of the 50/50's as they had for most of the morning.

The Railwaymen found a way back into the game with five minutes left when Roger ran his man at full back and pulled the ball back for DANIEL to side foot home from six yards.

Loko tried to get forward on a last couple of occasions to no avail as Rangers adopted an anywhere will do mentality.

Final Score Loko 4 v London Rangers 5

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"I think my end of game team talk told you all how I felt about our lack of desire to win the ball and our inability to use some intelligence to make the right decisions out there on he pitch."

Team Line Up
1. Terry
2. Paul (c)
3. Stefano
4. Ivan
5. Dale
6. Nelson
7. Daniel
8. Morris
9. Nicolas
10. Roger
11. Ismail
12. Steve M (Replaced Stefano 65th Minute)
13. Andy (Replaced Morris 65th Minute)

Goals
Roger (1)
20th Minute - Beat the defender and keeper to the ball and rolled into an empty net.
Nicolas (2)
30th Minute - Toe poked past the keeper and slided home.
35th Minute - Got behind the full back and drilled past the keeper into the bottom corner.
Daniel (1)
85th Minute - Roger beat the full back and pulled back for Daniel to side foot home.

Man of the Match
Nicolas - Two games and two fantastic man of the match performances, him and Roger who came a close second, never stopped running. Nicolas put in tackles and was in the right place again to score two good goals. He even had the desire to track back and get in the thick of the action when we were chasing the game.

Some people should look to Nicolas as an example of how you should approach the game, lots of desire to put in tackles, win the ball and to play some nice easy football. Keep it up.

Red Star Expose Defensive Frailties!

It was a last minute change of venue that allowed this game to proceed, after our match at Raynes Park Playing Fields was cancelled on the Saturday afternoon.

The team lined up with Terry kindly agreeing to go in goal for the season, a new back four of Andy, Ismail, Stefano and Ivan in defence, Peggy and Rhyce on the wings with Morris and Dave in the centre of midfield and Roger and Dale up front. Daniel and late arriving Vincent were on the bench.

Loko were on the back foot right from the start and it was evident that Red Star would pass and move and play to feet but the Railwaymen were disorganised early on and were failing to pick up the runners. Their first came within ten minutes when a corner was swung in and nobody picked up their biggest player who arrived unmarked at the back post to head in.

Shortly after Loko finally got up around their box when Dale swivelled on the half way line and played Roger in down the channel, he proceeded to win a corner and when Peggy swung it over Dale rose highest at the back post and headed goalwards only for it to be cleared from under the bar at the back post by the defender on the line.

That was as good as it got for Loko as Red Star continually got in behind the defence and were not being tracked or covered, on one occasion an unchallenged header in midfield sent them free to score and that said it all. Three quick goals came to put them 4-0 in front and Dale proceeded to go 4-5-1 and drop himself into centre back with Andy pushing into midfield and Stefano going right back. Another goal came shortly after when Dale was pushed over in the box before they slotted home but the referee didn't spot it to compound Loko's misery.

Roger almost got a consolation just before half-time when he ran through on goal but the keeper blocked his effort when one on one, and Loko then had their best spell of the match five minutes before half time when they finally started to keep the ball and knock it around, and most of all everyone stopped panicking.

Half-Time Loko 0 v Red Star United 5

Dale went in goal with Terry going out into midfield, and Daniel came on for Andy. It continued with 4-5-1 and Daniel went up top with Roger dropping into midfield.

Loko started the second half brightly and finally started to compete, but it had taken 40 minutes for us to realise that with some discipline and effort we could at least compete and give them a game. Daniel kept them on their toes at the back and early on him, Terry and Peggy got at them and nearly went through on goal on several occasions only for some good last ditch tackling to keep them out. Daniel then got loose in the area and with the ball at his feet seven yards out with just the keeper to beat, he fired over the bar.

Red Star still had a lot of possession in and around the area but didn't really penetrate the backline who had Dale organising them and keeping them marking instead of ball watching, which was quiet prevailant from certain individuals throughout the game. Morris was replaced by Vincent after he finally arrived at the ground late for the second week running.

Their final goal came when their left winger got behind Vincent at right back and played the ball across the centre of the six yard box, it was going out so nobody responded, but hit a divet which directed it onto the post and sat up for their player to tap home, it was an unfortunate goal to concede as we had battled hard in the second half and deserved to draw the half, but we wasted our one big chance and other half chances that had come our way, and then bad luck with the divet proved costly.

Final Score Loko 0 v Red Star United 6

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"We started the season with a back four of Paul K, PJ, Steve and Ivan, in this game we only had Ivan left and that left us with little understanding of each others game and it was clear that people were having to adjust playing in new positions and there was clearly no chemistry.

They are a very good team where everyone is comfortable on the ball and to be honest they shouldn't be playing in our division, along with Cultural it appears they should be playing at a higher level as it cannot be enjoyable for them running away with games and it wasn't enjoyable for us either. It was a game where we needed to be on top of our game to compete and have everyone available but we were nowhere near that.

Next week we play London Rangers and if we get everyone back then we need to push on and start getting some wins to keep us in the upper reaches of the division."

Team Line Up

11. Rhyce
12. Daniel (Replaced Andy 45th Minute)
13. Vincent (Replaced Morris 60th Minute)

Man of the Match
Dave (pictured above again) - It was difficult this week as no one really stood out in a poor performance but for sheer effort and non-stop running, Mr Kemp gets the accolade.

Referee Robs Loko of Victory!

Controversy reigned supreme at the Civil Service Sports Ground for this competitive Division 3 clash between two teams trying to push towards the top three places in the league, after the referee disallowed a Loko goal for offside, a full thirty seconds after Roger had rounded the keeper to score.

Twelve of the squad of thirteen arrived just about in time for a proper warm up, and the team lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Ismail going in goal, Morris, Steve, Stefano and Ivan in defence, Peggy, Paul K, Dave and Rhyce in midfield with Roger and new signing Nicolas up front.

Dale stressed the need for a strong start that we needed to keep it tight for the first ten to fifteen minutes but in true Loko style we started slowly and within ten minutes we were behind, a free kick on the edge of the area was well defended but a couple of phases later a high curling ball into the box was misjudged by Ismail and the ball sailed over his head and hit Ivan for an unfortunate own goal.

The Railwaymen responded well and Nicholas and Rhyce brought some nice quick football into the team and were linking up well with Roger and Peggy, we were playing some nice football around the edge of the box but were guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net again, when we should have been having a pop when we got chance.

Nicholas looked to have beaten the offside trap by a good five yards and ran through on goal only for the referee to whistle for a shocking offside decision.

Ismail didn't have a save to make for the rest of the half and Loko had a shot from Nicolas blocked in the six yard box and Roger curled an effort just wide of the post from outside of the box on the left hand side. Loko were very sloppy at times in the first half and on numerous occasions gave the ball away far too easily, we looked good going forward but defensively we struggled to keep the shape and clear our lines.

Stefano was replaced by Vincent just before half-time after clashing with Ismail and sustaining a dead leg. Ivan moved to centre back, Paul K to left back and Vincent went into centre midfield.

Half-Time Loko 0 v Simon Ridge 1

The lads came out of the blocks in the second half and within five minutes had levelled the scores, the ball was worked through midfield and found its way to DAVE in the penalty area and he drilled it passed the keeper into the bottom right hand corner.

The boys looked up for it and were now getting on top with Peggy and Rhyce beating their men on the wings and Nicolas and Roger holding the ball up well and linking with Dave and Vincent, but Loko contrived to shoot themselves in the foot again when Ismail called for a ball into the box under no pressure but was ignored by Paul who cleared for a corner, and from the corner Ismail tried to punch clear but only managed to punch it into the net to gift Simon Ridge their second own goal of the match.

It was good to see that heads didn't go down and Loko pressed forward playing much the better football, linking well and creating shooting opportunities in the box that we choose not to take, one shot that was taken was deflected by the defence for a corner and from Peggy's corner the ball fell kindly for STEVE (pictured above) to hit the top left post and cannon into the net.

Five minutes later and we were ahead, NICOLAS chased a lost cause with the defender who hesitated and the debutant nipped in, rounded the keeper and scored a great goal.

Loko were now totally dominant and apart from the two own goals Ismail had still not had to make a save. Loko kept pressing and thought they had the victory sawn up when Rhyce played a ball over the top for Roger to run through, with no whistle for offside from the referee, round the keeper and score. Simon Ridge were insistant it was offside and the referee changed her mind after the goal had been scored, thirty seconds after the through ball, which is clearly not within the law.

The play was dead once the goal had been scored and at that point no decison to change her mind could be taken, but she did and Simon Ridge were given further help in a game Loko were determined to throw away.

The inevitable happened ten minutes later when a hopeful high ball into the box was missed by Steve and their striker finally had their first shot on target to hit the bottom corner and level the scores.

Both teams had late opportunities to win the match, Roger got past the last defender but his touch was too hard and the keeper claimed, a hopeful long ball by Simon Ridge beat three defenders and the lone striker ran through and miskicked wide. They then had a chance where their striker managed to turn in the box and shoot straight at Ismail and finally Dave had a shot tipped round the top corner by their keeper who made a good save.

Final Score Loko 3 v Simon Ridge 3

Manager Dale Mellor's comments:
"It was a very mixed performance today, we played some outstanding football at times and glided past them with ease but we didn't test the keeper enough and tried to walk the ball in to the net.

We were also quite wasteful with the ball and continually miscontrolled the ball or passed it straight to them and gave away possession which affected our momentum and ultimately we had too many spells during the game where we lost concentration and gifted them possession and giving them two of their goals was the difference in the game.

We cannot be hard on Ismail, he has agreed to go in goal when most others wouldn't consider it and until we can get a keeper in or Steve Martin will be back and will hopefully agree to go in goal for the remainer of this season until we find a new one, we will have to keep switching keepers and suffer these lapses.

Overall, I would say this was two points lost and yes we can complain about our goal which shouldn't have been disallowed even though it may have been offside, that is not the issue, either give it or don't but you cannot change your mind after the goal has been scored and the play has ended.
In the end we threw it away by shooting ourselves in the foot with the own goals and Simon Ridge will be much happier with the result.

Let's get some good numbers for a difficult game against Red Star United next week."

Team Line Up
1. Ismail
2. Morris
3. Ivan
4. Stefano
5. Steve (c)
6. Paul K
7. Peggy
8. Dave
9. Nicolas
10. Roger
11. Rhyce
12. Vincent (Replaced Stefano 43rd Minute)
13. Dale

Goals
Dave (1)
50th Minute - Drilled into the bottom right corner from around the penalty spot.
Steve (1)
60th Minute - A corner landed kindly for a shot in off the left hand post in to the top corner.
Nicolas (1)
65th Minute - Nipped in behind the defender, rounded the keeper and scored.

Man of the Match
Nicolas - Probably one of the best Loko debuts I have seen, comfortable on the ball, worked his socks off and had the finish to match. Very well played.
