Match Report - Loko v South Auckland Rangers

Sunday 30th October 2005
Barnesalona League

Lokomotiv Londres FC 1 v South Auckland Rangers 3

Loko rocked up at Barnes station for their first match of the season at Barnes Common, hoping that the change of location would put an end to their recent run of misfortune. They were to be sorely disappointed. Unbelievably no one had forgotten about the clocks going back, and almost everyone was on time. Loko were looking for revenge over Auckland after their injury-time equaliser last weekend, and were encouraged by the healthy turnout that meant a strong eleven could be fielded for the second week in a row.

Jules took up his place between the sticks, and Rohan and Ivan once again started as full-backs. With Paul away and Nick held up, Ali and Pete were on hand to step into the breach at centre-half. Dale, acting captain in Paul’s absence, prepared to break up the Kiwi attacks in the holding midfield role. Clint, taking over the playmaker mantle from Aubrey, partnered him in the centre. Adrian returned to the starting eleven at right midfield, and Christophe replaced Stephane on the left wing. New boy Paolo partnered Andreas up front, with Johan and later Nick on the bench.

Jules’ game plan was thrown out of the window when it emerged that Auckland had changed from the 4-5-1 formation they used last week to a standard 4-4-2, in order to accommodate the return of their hot-headed guy. Well I know they have several hot-headed guys, but this one was the hothead with the afro. You know the one I mean – the one that took a swing at Ivan from the ground. Let’s call him… Appleby. In any case the idea of having Ali man-mark the other tricky striker and Pete sweep up (with the full backs man-marking the wingers) was ditched in favour of a general zonal marking system, counteracting the free roles given to the Auckland forwards.

The system seemed to work well; with the midfield dropping well to cover Loko restricted Auckland to just two efforts on goal in the first half, and both of those from free kicks. Loko meanwhile enjoyed the lion’s share of attacking possession and created the first good chance; Andreas controlled Adrian’s cross and finished well but the effort was ruled out for offside. Dale was bossing the centre and charging through like a rampaging rhino. Twice he went clear but both times the Auckland defence forced him wide and he couldn’t quite hit the target. Clint, Paolo and Christophe linked up well and stretched the opponents’ back line but clear-cut chances were in short supply.

Meanwhile Auckland had their first chance – whilst challenging for a header with two Auckland players Rohan clattered their captain (a decent fellow) near the edge of the box. Rohan went to help him up but was pushed away by Appleby. The resulting free kick was in a dangerous position but deflected off the wall and well wide. Soon afterwards another Auckland player was injured, coming off worse after fouling Andreas. Play was stopped for about 10 minutes while he received attention but eventually it was decided that he needed to go to hospital. Loko only created one clear chance before the break. Rohan intercepted a pass on the right and fed Andreas down the wing. He jinked past his marker and sent a peach of a cross over into the path of Christophe, who unfortunately couldn’t quite control it at pace and put his effort over the bar.

Then, in yet another cruel twist of fate, the last kick of the half resulted in Auckland nicking the lead. Another foul, this time further out, saw the Loko wall line up as before. This time the free kick was curled over the wall and in a confusion of bodies the ball was deflected past the man on the post. A kick in the teeth for our brave lads and no mistake.

Half-Time Loko 0 v South Auckland Rangers 1

The ref had blown for half time immediately after the goal went in so Jules had no more than a minute to revise his half-time talk. For the second week in a row he was pleased with the effort and commitment, and reminded Loko that they in no way deserved to be behind. He urged the players to continue making the triangles in midfield and playing Andreas in behind. Johan came on for Christophe at left wing.

Loko battled hard from the restart and the match soon became a ferocious physical contest. Dale and Pete spurred the team on vocally, and both of them led by example, winning headers and 50-50s in the middle of the park.

The nastier side of Auckland/Dave Argyle came out as the tempo rose, with several flashpoints. Of course Appleby was at the centre of things, squaring up to Clint, which led to various other players getting involved (including a mad Paul Richardson dash from Jules to break things up). Culprit number two was that guy who looks like a peanut who always used to annoy Roger, who was yellow carded for deliberately clipping Paolo with his studs. He was lucky to stay on the pitch as the referee was the only person not to see him do the same thing to Jules a minute later.

Anyway Lokos’ pressure eventually paid off when Andreas’ shot was saved and Paolo (pictured above) managed to turn the rebound into the roof of the net to equalise. For a moment it was sooo sweet and Loko looked certain at this point to go on and take the points, as they continued to attack with renewed vigour. Sadly Auckland were able to capitalise immediately on the counter attack. The other small Auckland striker, from Plymouth apparently!?!!, wriggled free near the penalty spot; despite scuffing his shot he had done enough to smuggle it under Jules and the ball bobbled agonisingly in despite Ali’s frantic chase to cover. Within a minute Auckland were 3-1 up as a long ball bounced through the middle and the same little guy profited from hesitancy in the Loko ranks to nip through, this time finishing smartly into the bottom left corner.

The wind was completely knocked out of Lokos’ sails, but they gradually picked themselves up again in an attempt to get back in the match. There was a lot of huffing and puffing but with little end product as once again Loko showed a lack of fitness in the latter stages. Nick came on for Clint, who had picked up a knock. Johan managed a couple of runs into the area from the left, one of which resulted in a shot but the keeper gathered comfortably. Auckland defended in numbers and always managed to snuff out the final pass.

They themselves only had one more chance, with the little guy missing out on his hat trick when he shot too close to Jules through a crowded area and the manager got down well to stop it on the line. Loko’s best chance to force a nervy end to the game came when a slick move ended with Adrian placing a superb cross on Paolo’s head at the far post but the striker couldn’t quite direct it. The final minutes passed without further incident, and when the final whistle blew the players couldn’t understand how they had managed to come off second best yet again. Bring on Barnes! We’re sick of playing Munchen and Auckland!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Final Score Loko 1 v South Auckland Rangers 3

Manager Julian Milne's comments:

"Although the results are not going our way at the moment, I am not at all discouraged. Whenever a new manager takes over at this level there is always a high turnover of players and it was inevitable that it would take a while for the team to find its feet again.

I feel we have recruited some really decent players; Peter, Stephane and Clint to name but three, and we just need to gel a bit. The performances are improving and I think the last two games we played well. The players did what I asked them to do and we are becoming more rugged and determined. All our recent games have been very tight and we just need to be a bit more ruthless and aggressive to turn the tide, and we will.

We are yet to play the teams in the lower half of the league and I think when we do we will begin to see the improvements we have made become increasingly tangible. I want to recruit a good striker to play alongside Andreas as I believe we don't have anyone who can play week in week out in that position as yet. This is another area we can strengthen and I will be putting out adverts this week.

Heads up guys, a result against Barnes on Sunday and we can start climbing up the league.

Man of the Match: Peter - his best game in a loko shirt yet, commanding at the back."

Match Report - South Auckland Rangers v Loko

Sunday 23rd October 2005
Barnesalona Cup

South Auckland Rangers 2 v Lokomotiv Londres FC 2

A strong Loko line-up took to the field to play Auckland for the second time this season. The last time these sides met was Loko’s first (and so-far only) win of the campaign, running out worthy 3-1 winners. It turned out that that was Auckland’s only defeat up to this point which baffled the Loko players because the Kiwis were by far the weakest of the sides they had faced thus far, but it soon became apparent that South Auckland Rangers are now an amalgam of the better players of two of last year’s teams, Auckland and the banished Dave Argyle. Now with a full squad and fresh from a surprise 5-2 win over WKK, they went into the match as favourites to take the points and gain revenge over the brave and bonny Loko lads.

The Loko team sheet was the strongest yet, on paper, that manager Julian had had to pick from. He once again donned the no.1 jersey himself (he’ll never get rid of it now), and Rohan, Paul, Nick and Ivan lined up in defence. Dale, returning from a couple of games out was pushed forward into midfield in the holding role to add some physical and vocal clout where it had previously been lacking. He was partnered in the engine room by new recruit Aubrey who was hoping to fill that semi-pro sized hole left by Roger. Dave returned on the right wing and Stephane, perhaps the find of the season so far, slotted in on the left. And finally Julian had some options in attack (!) with Mark returning from a long-term injury to rejoin his Tournoi strike partner Andreas, and the master Steve Whitely returning at long last in a stretched limo to take up a place on the bench alongside Adrian.

The pitch suddenly looked wintry after two weeks of rain and that added to the strong squad made it feel like the opening exchanges were over and the season was beginning in earnest. The match kicked off with league chairman Cedric in charge and Loko at last seemed in the mood to compete from the off. Both sides were clearly up for the challenge and every ball was fiercely contested. Loko seemed a different class with a powerful new midfield and quickly reaped the rewards. A smart through ball from midfield sent Andreas (pictured below) clean through and he clipped his shot neatly over the keeper and into the far corner for 1-0.

Unbowed, Dave Arg- I mean Auckland – charged straight back at Loko and enjoyed a spell of pressure that culminated in their equaliser. Several attacks were repulsed before one resulted in a corner. The ball was cleared at the near post but only as far as the Auckland no.11 waiting near the edge of the box. He swung the ball back across the six-yard box, just eluding Dale’s head; the Loko defence stepped up and the ball fell neatly at the feet of the kiwi striker who sent a bobbling shot just past Julian who got a finger to it.

The Loko of old would have let their heads drop after such an immediate setback, but the current incarnation went on to dominate the rest of the first half. Mark was sent clear but his effort was gathered by the keeper, as was his shot on the turn from a knockdown after a corner. He was then forced to hobble off after a challenge around the half-hour mark; Steve took his place and soon showed that his classy first touch hasn’t deserted him, dictating the pace of the attack and dropping deep. Andreas was sent through on a couple of occasions but each time the Auckland players ran in front of him and round him like, bees swarming around…around…. I can’t remember what it was that Paul Richardson (Ex-Manager) said bees swarm around.

Aubrey, chasing hard in the middle, almost caught out the opponents’ keeper with a sharp drive from 30 yards that skimmed just the wrong side of the post and Steve managed to play the ball along the goal line from a yard out into the keepers hands when the goal looked certain. Loko went in at the break enjoying the contest but slightly disappointed to be level.

Half-time South Auckland Rangers 1 v Loko 1

In his pre-match speech Julian had focused on commitment in the challenge and header, and made it clear that first-team spots would go to those who put in the effort for the team. He was well pleased that his words had been heeded, and with the first-half performance in general, and thus switched the focus onto the players’ belief that they could pull off a win. With the team working well there were no substitutions.

Again Loko flew in the face of time-honoured tradition and actually made good on their half-time intentions. They piled forwards and put Auckland under intense pressure. Andreas was hauled down in the box but the appeal was waved away. Aubrey went close with a shot from the left. Steve headed straight at the keeper from a corner. Dale caught a volley sweetly from close range but the keeper got a foot to it. The goal finally came when Andreas wriggled free and this time placed his shot under the keeper from 12 yards.

Then the sun came out and the wheels fell off. Loko’s energy levels fell, despite Adrian coming on for Stephane. Auckland spent the final half-hour entrenched in the Loko half. Only a string of excellent saves from Julian kept Loko in it. Auckland were also guilty of sending several shots over the bar. After one particularly good save by Julian, the old Dave Argyll left back screamed “You fu*ki*g jammy c*nts” which made the rest of both teams roll around in fits of laughter, but the fact of the matter was that we were not being lucky, it was good goalkeeping, the same as their keeper had played for the first sixty minutes.

Auckland finally scored with the last action of the game, a looping header into the top corner finally beating Julian. It was galling to concede in such a manner but on balance a draw was a fair result in a hard-fought see-saw match. However if Loko can keep this squad together they should be in decent shape for the coming fixtures. Next up is Auckland in the league at Barnes Common and another match like this one will keep the pundits purring.

Final-Score South Auckland Rangers 2 v Loko 2

Manager Julian Milne's comments:

"It was hard not to come away from the game feeling like we had lost. Conceeding a goal deep into injury time is always hard to take but it is important to emphasise the importance of getting a result, albeit a draw, against a really decent Auckland side.

I want the team to progress every week and look at any areas where we can improve. We have stopped conceeding goals from set pieces and on Sunday the players addressed one of the issues that has been concerning me - players not being able to adapt their games to the physical requirements of Sunday league football. For sixty minutes we did that. We were strong, Dale and Aubrey dominating the midfield, and all over the pitch players were getting stuck in. That now has to become the watermark not the exception. This team has great potential, but to fully develop it must contain players who are committed and focused week in week out.

That brings me to the issue of fitness. For the last 20 minutes we looked shattered and it is clear that certain players are not 'match' fit. I spoke about it after the match but it is relevant to all the members of the squad. We have gone flat in several games towards the end and it is obvious why. Not many players showed the commitment I was looking for when I organised the pre-seson training sessions and that lack of enthusiasm for the more demanding aspects of playing for the club seems to be far reaching. Can everyone please make the effort to get into shape so that we can start playing to our potential. A jog or visit to the gym every now and then please! again it comes back to your commitment to playing football and the club.

To end on a positive note, I thought it was a much improved performance and I was encouraged by many players adapting their games and playing well. A good debut from Aubrey and two more goals from our super striker. It was nice to see Steve back in the colours. I am looking forward to the rematch and I think we will get another result."

Captain's Corner - October 2005

This is Captain Paul Dwinfour's October installment:

"Five games into the new season now and, despite just one victory, there are definite positives to be drawn that should give us encouragement. Our solitary win was a comeback victory from one-nil down and that’s always particularly satisfying. Also, we’ve had a number of new good quality players join this season much to the benefit of the strength of the squad. However, there’s no disguising the fact that 4 defeats in 5 games is disappointing. Twice we’ve been trounced which is never a nice feeling but two narrow defeats, both 2-1 against the same opposition, is even more frustrating.

We’ve identified there’s not much to choose between most teams in our league so it’s particularly important for us to score points against other teams of the same level. We cannot simply trust to luck or hope that things will go our way, it’s a sharper edge and increased effort that will deliver what we are capable of.

Somehow, we’ve allowed the opposition, such as Munchen, to win more of the ball, control the game and win the match. I urge us all as a collective not to allow the opposition to gain control in such a way. If we are genuinely outplayed then we must accept the need to improve our skill level or adjust tactically.

Often, our main issue is the need to show greater desire and strive to achieve the best result. Recent results, three defeats in three competitions, have not been a true reflection of our abilities. Our target remains as at the beginning of the season, we are a ‘top-half’ team. Ten to fifteen percent extra all-round in terms of determination and belief should result in a winning run to put us back on track.

This league is no easy ride but I’ve no doubt we can meet the challenge."

Match Report - Munchen v Loko

Sunday 9th October 2005
Barnesalona Cup

Munchen 2 v Lokomotiv Londres FC 1

A week after a narrow and frustrating defeat against Munchen, Loko lined up looking to extract revenge against a decent but unspectacular side.

The team was much changed, however, from the one that had lost the week before, and that lack of consistency in personnel was to prove costly for Loko as the game bore on. Julian lined up in goal in front of a back four of Ivan, Nick, Paul and Rohan. Nick playing out of position at centre back. In midfield, Stephane, Ismail, Renato and trialist Danny. Up front, Andreas returned and was partnered by another trialist named Mike.

The game started well for Loko, early pressure led to some good possession down the left side in particular. Stephane was making some nice runs and Ismail was competing well in the centre. No clear cut chances had been created by either side however when Andreas (pictured below) picked up the ball with his back to goal, side stepped a beleaguered Munchen defender and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the roof of the net from fully 30 yards.

Loko had taken the lead for the first time this season. A period of 10 minutes followed with neither side wrestling the initiative and both showing an aptitude for throwing the ball down the line and gaining a couple of yards trench warfare style. The unexpected Indian summer meant the game was being played in warm, almost perfect conditions. That was the backdrop. Barnes in all its glory and the loko brows were certainly glistening as the Munchen rearguard action went up a gear, great long balls cannoned forward looking to be flicked on to exploit the space behind the back four and fully utilise the pace of their number 10 * (* connotates star player).

This tactic had been used to good effect in the first fixture last week and it was to provide the equaliser a quarter of the way into the match. A ball flicked forward saw number 10 pounding down on goal with Julian caught in no man's land, prey to the lob that was accurately dispatched into the gawping net. Loko heads seemed to drop and perhaps the psychological battle had already been played out when the teams left the pitch at half time.

Half-Time Munchen 1 v Loko 1

The manager tried to galvanise the players and demanded more commitment all over the pitch to try and turn the tide that seemed to be flowing towards the Loko net. Rohan was only too aware of this having to take the innumerable goal kicks that resulted from the habitual but largely ineffective flow of Munchen attacks. Sandbags in the tide.

As the second half progressed it became apparent that it would take a moment of individual brilliance from either Andreas or Stephane to produce the goal Loko craved. increasingly the midfield battle was being lost as headers and second ball challenges became less robust and Munchen figured they had the measure of a slightly disjointed Loko side.

Rohan, having mastered the art of the 'half volley header' happened to miss one and clattered their striker leaving Munchen with a free kick on the edge of the area. A tame but accurate effort to the top corner was easily deflected by the keeper for a corner which was well defended. The defense was holding up however with Nick man marking number 10 and keeping him quieter that he had been over the last three halves.

Paul was winning some important headers and it seemed for a moment that Loko might hold out for a valuable point. These hopes were dashed however with 15 minutes left to play, number 10 dribbling into the box and although shadowed by Nick unleashed a powerful shot from a tough angle which beat the keeper at the near post. 2-1 to Munchen.

Do you ever get deja vue? didn't you just ask me that? And so it was.

The final minutes seeing a delayed reaction from the Lokomotiv team who rallied in the last five minutes and some concerted pressure led to a few goal mouth incidents which never troubled the opposition keeper. The final whistle echoed to the same score line but in some ways it had been a very different game from the previous week.

Ultimately the difference was that Munchen have a settled side who all know each other and play to a decent standard week in week out. Loko need to find that consistency and soon it will all fall into place. Next up Madras and a chance to get back up the league table.

Full-Time Munchen 2 v Loko 1

Manager Julian Milne's comments:

"Another tight game but the score line was a fair reflection on proceedings. We started well and Andreas scored another sublime goal to give us the lead but Munchen gradually asserted themselves, winning most of their personal battles.

I am happy we didn't concede from set pieces however and thought a few personal performances were excellent. In particular Stephane, Nick and Andreas. The foundations are there for a successful season we just need to recruit a couple of competitive players to lend the team a more aggressive side and instill some self-belief.

We have stopped conceding soft goals and I think we will start grinding out some results sooner rather than later. Heads up lads.

Man of the match: Stephane with Nick a close second."

Match Report - Munchen v Loko

Sunday 2nd October 2005
Barnesalona League

Munchen 2 v Lokomotiv Londres FC 1

Looking to forget the disappointment of the FA Junior Cup exit and build on their success in the league against Auckland, Loko’s players rolled up to the pitch at Barn Elms for a third successive afternoon kick off. Manager Jules was yet again forced to be creative when shuffling his pack of player cards as he found himself with no strikers; Andreas, Olivier and Rudi all were absent and Mark yet to return from injury.

The team lined up with Jules in goal; Rohan, Paul, Ali and Christophe at the back, and Dave, Adrian, Stephane and new signing Clint in midfield. Ismail took on the strikers’ mantle but there was still an empty slot. Striding out of the mist of Loko past came the ethereal figure of Oliver Whitney-Coates, having heard the ancient call to arms.

The game kicked off in fantastic football conditions but Loko were half asleep as usual. Munchen are a very average team by Barnesalona standards but have a strong physical presence and Loko failed to switch on and challenge for the ball. Munchen piled on the pressure early without ever really looking like scoring. However, with the ball coming straight through the Loko midfield after every missed header the sheer weight of possession was bound to bring some reward, and so it proved. After 10 minutes under the cosh Loko conceded a corner. Slack marking allowed the Munchen ponytail a free run from the edge of the area to make a sweet connection with the ball and power an unstoppable header into the net.

With the absence of Dale other voices attempted to prevent Loko heads sinking and briefly the tide was stemmed. Unfortunately, having not fully recovered from an ankle injury, Jules was unable to take the goal kicks, with Rohan and Adrian sharing the duties, which left Loko with an even taller order to win the headers in the centre of the park. There was no excuse though for the lack of conviction when competing for the second ball and Munchen soon capitalised, easily threading a ball through for their centre forward who ran onto it and slotted past Jules for 2-0.

At this point, with only twenty minutes gone and no strikers the outlook seemed bleak to anyone who has followed Loko for a while. A 5-0 or 5-1 looked on the cards but Loko slowly managed to get themselves back in the fight. Clint and Ali showed the way, competing fiercely for the ball in the centre and Paul shored up the defensive line. The crowd became excited and a great chorus of ‘only one Whitney Coates’ went up as Ollie continually found good space in the final third. Loko finished the half on the attack and Munchen not having had a sniff of a chance since the second goal.

Half-Time Munchen 2 v Loko 0

Encouraged by the fight back and boosted by the late arrival of Samer, Jules wasn’t as angry as he might have been, but still lambasted the team for their failure to compete from the off. Samer came on for Ollie, who disappeared in a puff of smoke. Ivan replaced Christophe at left back. The wingers Stephane and Dave were told to come more into the centre to help Adrian and Clint compete for the headers.

Playing uphill and into the sun Loko nevertheless managed to dominate the second half, with Munchen resorting to attacking on the break. Samer dropped deep to collect and formed effective triangles with Ismail and Clint. Ivan’s physical presence in the back line seemed to galvanise the defence too as Loko began to win more than their fair share of the headers.

They were rewarded with half an hour still to go as Dave chipped the ball into Ismail, who headed on for Samer (pictured above) to flick the ball over the despairing Munchen keeper to bring it back to 2-1.

Loko’s best chance to draw level came about 10 minutes later when Munchen conceded a series of corners, two of which resulted in goalmouth scrambles which were only just cleared off the line. Munchen had chances of their own though including a corner headed off the line by Ivan an attempted lob over Jules that floated wide and a snap shot from the penalty spot that whisled just over.

In the closing stages though Loko could not make the possession count and the final minutes ran down with no late scares for Munchen. Jules and the players were rightly disappointed to have conceded the two early goals, although it had been satisfying to play in such an even contest that never descended into argument despite being fiercely contested. Loko play Munchen again in the cup this Sunday and so have the chance for instant revenge.

Full-Time Munchen 2 v Loko 1

Manager Julian Milne's comments:

"A narrow defeat and a game we should have got something out of. Another goal conceded from a corner and again we failed to convert any of our own set pieces. At the moment we are playing with a handicap and are giving each team a head-start.

When we brought it back to 2-1 I thought we would have a real go and although we played well I thought we lacked a little bit of self-belief and raw desire to turn the game around. Some good individual performances however and if we can continue to fine-tune and improve we will start winning games.

Right now we need some leaders out there and some players who can step up to the challenge."

Kind Words For Loko!

The club recently received an email from an ex-Barnesalona League player who was very complimentary about the website and the spirit at the club, keep it up boys and lets get a good reputation for playing this game in the right spirit and hopefully success will follow.

It read as follows:-

"Hi there,

I was just checking the Barnesalona website and clicked on the link to your site.

I just wanted to say that I think your site is fantastic - last year I played for one of the other teams in the league and on so many occasions things were not enjoyable. It looks as though you've got a great morale going through the team and it's nice to see.

Good luck for the season."
